Whole body medicine looks to identify the source of disease within an individual. Many times that source is physical, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, nutritional deficiency, or hormone imbalance. Other times, however, the source of disease comes from the mind on a mental, emotional, or spiritual level. Naturopathic counseling seeks to find the source of this conflict and help an individual resolve it.
Naturopathic physicians are trained in general counseling topics such as grief/loss, family and marriage dynamics, work, self esteem/body image, and general life coaching. We are not the primary source of mental health management for more complicated issues such as schizophrenia, anorexia, psychosis, and severe depression, however, we can provide adjunctive care. Many individuals prefer our style of combining body, mind, and spirit – as well as looking at the patient as a whole person.
At ALETRIS, we have various methods of treating anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, and our beliefs about what can cause these issues is multidimensional.
Mental health concerns may originate in the mind, come from a physical disorder, or may be a combination of the two. For example, most people are aware of the mental symptoms of anxiety, agitation, and irritability that come from ingesting too much caffeine. Thoughts and feelings can cause distress in the body; however, physical imbalances can cause the same level of distress. Patients often say,”I don’t have any reasons to feel this way…my life is good…I just do.” In those cases, we are able to address these causes which include:
Blood sugar dysfunction
Essential fatty acid deficiency
Heavy metal toxicity
To diagnose these physiological conditions, we may look at blood work, specialty testing, and analysis of a complete medical history. We feel that if time and finances allow, addressing mental health issues via both therapy and medical treatment is the most beneficial and fulfilling for the patient.
